Real art is one of the most powerful forces in the rise of mankind, and he who renders it accessible to as many people as possible is a benefactor of humanity.

Our Story

We are happy to announce that In May this year, the Buffalo Master Chorale partnered with the Buffalo Niagara Youth Chorus as part of a newly formed “family of choirs” functioning as the Buffalo Niagara Choirs, Inc. Governed by a newly elected Board of Directors and committed to the lifelong musical enrichment of its multigenerational membership, the Buffalo Master Chorale is proud to announce its official formation and offer its singing in service of community culture, health and happiness.

The Buffalo Master Chorale started in 2012 as an emerging group of choral enthusiasts meeting regularly to sing and explore the possibilities of forming an urban-based ensemble. A leadership team formed as an acting governing body to oversee strategic planning and administration, and the ensemble began building a performance repertoire under the leadership of John Fleischman, Jr., former assistant conductor to Doreen Rao and the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus.

At Mr. Fleischman’s suggestion, the Master Chorale leadership approached the Buffalo Niagara Youth Chorus Trustees with a plan to unite the two choirs. The new partnership plan was unanimously embraced by the BNYC Board with legal support for this organizational union provided by the generosity of Buffalo friends, donors and patrons.

Through choral projects and performance collaborations that unite a diverse urban community of school, church and community choirs, the Buffalo Master Chorale plans to provide a range of concerts and workshops that promote local culture and global recognition.  Its 2013-2014 inaugural season will showcase concert and workshop events to celebrate the Benjamin Britten centennial, perform a feast of European and American masterpieces and sponsor choral outreach to local conductors and music educators in a series of choral workshops and conducting master classes.

The Buffalo Master Chorale will perform under the musical direction of conductor, scholar and master teacher, Doreen Rao, University of Toronto Elmer Iseler Chair and professor emeritus (1988-2011), former director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus (2008-2012) and director of the CME Institute for Choral Teacher Education. Music educator and director of the Buffalo Niagara Youth Chorus, John Fleischman Jr., will serve as BMC’s associate conductor.

Doreen Rao, John Fleischman and the membership of the Buffalo Master Chorale wish to express deep gratitude to all those friends, colleagues and patrons who supported this transformational partnership and contributed to the “birth” of Buffalo’s new multigenerational “family of choirs.”
